Walis Summer is an auto-documentation of my process making coconut mid-rib brooms, walis ting ting, in friends’ backyards and lanais in Honolulu while the pandemic kept us all in a state of hypervigilance. This style of broom is used universally in places with coconut trees, making this process one that is both common but consistently threatened by plastic or other readymade brooms. Both meditative and therapeutic in this time, the walis reconnected me to coconut tree, my ancestors, and intentional cleaning as care.
