At what expense do we devastate mountains? Claw the earth with mechanical arms, mount false divisions, grind rocks into gravel and tread gravel into dust. An unending cycle of construction-destruction. What is my relationship with the earth? The actual earth, the real dirt, I mean, the crumbled dry desert terrain crisp and fragile? Eroding barrancas and thirsty dams dust my shoe-soles and coat my windshield. Toenails harbor sand. My rock collection is in a box in someone’s concrete side-shed. I just can’t help to think that the dirt-rock-earth-planet doesn’t much enjoy our scratching scratching scratching.
